In late January 2023, Val and I traveled to her mother’s timeshare in Cabo San Lucas to enjoy some R and R at Villa del Arco Beach Resort and Spa. The property had an accessible trolly that shuttled us from place to place, enabling us to traipse through neighboring sister properties like Villa Del Palmar and Villa Dela Estancia. While onsite, Val and I took a couples massage class by the pool, worked out in the gym, sat through their programmed cocktail hour entertainment, and soaked our feet in Epsom salts in our in-room jacuzzi.
When we were feeling adventurous, we also made some time to explore the local area by taking a water taxi to where the tourists gathered near “the Arch” at Land’s End. We saw the sand-strewn scene divided into Lover’s Beach (calm waters) and Divorce Beach (rough waters). We also spent a separate evening on a sunset buffet cruise onboard the Caborey (a recommended excursion from the staff at our timeshare). It was chillier than expected at this time of the year, so we did not bother swimming near the Islands and Protected Areas of the Gulf of California—a UNESCO World Heritage site in its own right.
Before we returned to the dreary winter season of New York, we checked out San José del Cabo. According to our property’s website: “Cabo San Lucas is situated at the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula, while San Jose del Cabo lies just northeast of Cabo along Highway 1. Together, they make up Los Cabos, which translates to ‘the (two) Cabos.’” We took a leisurely stroll through its quaint art scene, rich with colorful ceramics and eco-sourced statues, and bought several handcrafted souvenirs to support local merchants. Our brief respite in Cabo, accompanied by its sun-soaked landscapes and playful tourism economy, satisfied our longing for beachside bliss.
